Her career in journalism began with Myrtle Beach South Carolina as an anchor and news reporter at WPDE-TV. She later became a morning news anchor as well as a crime reporter at WCBD TV. O'Dell's reports in Charleston concerning the lack of leniency by police regarding DUI cases, prompted the State Law Enforcement Division to examine. The result was state authorities issuing more strict regulations in these cases. In the year 2000, Associated Press awarded Ms. O'Dell an award for the Best Report of the year Award for all South Carolina media. Her work in Charleston led her to serve as co-anchor and investigative reporter as well as NBC's Miami WTVJ-TV.
